Padres vs. Brewers, 12:35 PM, May 11, 2006

Will the Pads continue their hot streak? Jake Peavy, the ace of the pitching staff, will take the mound today against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Padres will try to make it 11 out of their last 12. Lorri and I decided to make a day of it. We packed a picnic lunch and took the 9:17 Coaster out of Encinitas and headed downtown.
Here I am at the Encinitas station waiting for the train.
These were taken downtown at Santa Fe Depot. From here we walked out to the Bay and strolled south toward Seaport Village.
The aircraft carrier Midway is now part of the San Diego Maritime Museum and is open for tours. I guess there is still some commercial fishing done out of San Diego. I can't think of what else these boats would be used for. There I am on the sea wall at Seaport Village.
We had our picnic lunch at the park that juts out into the bay from Seaport Village and sort of wraps around the Marina in front of the Marriott. Is that Marina Park? I don't know but it's a nice, scenic setting and, as one can see, it was not very crowded.
This is looking back from the Park across the marina toward the Marriott and the Convention Center. On the right is part of Seaport Village again looking toward the Marriott.
Next stop: Petco Park!
We had good seats which we purchased online through the "Padre Marketplace" which is sort of a clearing house for season ticket holders who want to unload tickets for individual games. We sat in the "Toyota Terrace" section 212, row 3, which gave us access to all the restaurants on that level and included waiter service at our seats.
Here we are in one of the restaurants about to enjoy a pre-game cocktail. I snapped this photo of Jake Peavy loosening up with a buddy.

I guess I forgot to take any photos during the game so you can look at this logo instead. The Padres won, 8-5. Peavy, despite a couple beers before the game, pitched an excellent seven innings, striking out 13 batters (tying a career-high), giving up only two hits and not allowing a run. He also contributed a single, double and a couple RBI's!
After the game we hit the Gaslamp for a celebratory beverage and ended up at a new restaurant called "Masala". (Well, it's been open five weeks already which means that probably 10 or 20 newer restaurants have opened in and around the Gaslamp, but it was "new" to us.) It's subtitle is "Spices of India" and we sampled a couple starters while sitting at the bar and they were pretty good. The drinks were good and we met a nice couple who had also attended the game. The bartender took the photo of us.
We caught (barely) the 6:05 Coaster out of San Diego and got to Encinitas before it was even dark! We debated on heading from the train station over to the Meritage to partake in a Thursday night martini special but for once our better judgment won out and we went home.
This is what it might have looked like from our balcony when we got home. Unfortunately we haven't seen the sun in, like, forever. We're in the middle of a gray May which inevitably will lead to June gloom. This photo was taken April 28 which may have been the last day we spotted the sun from Encinitas. Can't wait to go back east where it's warm and sunny!
