April 8, 2008, Baton Rouge, home of LSU, the Louisiana State University,
the 2007 NCAA Football BCS Champion. This was the day after the team had
an audience with President Bush at the White House.

I was sort of curious to see the campus and, for some reason, wasn't
expecting much. It turned out to be a beautiful campus and the
surrounding part of town was equally impressive.

If you look closely, you can see Mike the LSU Tiger in the photo on the
left. There have been quite a few Mikes over the years. This one is Mike
the tenth or so. We got our photo taken next to the bronze LSU Tiger.
It's not a Nittany Lion but it's not bad.
That afternoon we headed for Gulf State Beach near Golf Shores,
Alabama, hoping it would be one of those nice state park campgrounds
tucked in among the dunes with cool pathways to the beach. It turned out
to be a big flat parking lot, more or less, with beach access about a
mile-and-a-half away. So we set up, plugged in, and made the most of it.

The next day, April 9, we tried to find the venerable Florabama Bar,
on the border of Florida and Alabama, home of the world-famous
Intrastate Mullet Toss, but we missed it. It got mostly washed away by
"The Hurricane" and apparently is in the process of being rebuilt. We
didn't even realize we had crossed into Florida until several miles
later.

So, we aimed for another state park, this time a Florida State Park
which we knew to be way out on a barrier island with great beaches and
trails but when we got there we found they had just given away their
last space. We ended up at a private RV park called Indian Pass which is
where the previous five photos were taken. The place was OK but sort of
littered here and there with semi-permanent trailers like the one in the middle photo two rows up.

The night of April 10 was spent at St. Mary's KOA, just north of the
Florida line off I-95 in Georgia. This is where we had Thursday Martini
Night as you can see in the photo on the right. We spent most of the day
traveling east on I-10 and then north on I-95 because we wanted to get
to Charlston, South Carolina by Friday night.
