April 16, 2008, Williamsburg, VA, an
excellent day for a walk in the woods! We took the trail along the north
shore of Lake Matoaka, formerly known as the pond at Ludwell's Mill. I
know this because it shows up on
Rochambeau's Map made in 1782, Rochambeau being the French general
who gave GW a helping hand against the British during the Revolutionary
war.
The lake is on the campus of William & Mary as is the trail. This is the amphitheater with the lake in the background. We have not seen a concert here but it's a beautiful setting for the series of Friday-nighters which will start soon. I think the statue on the right is of James Blair, the first head honcho at William and Mary. A few photos of the campus in springtime. Meanwhile, back at the house later that afternoon, my bro Bob and I sharpen our golf swings with a few wiffle golf balls. The Parkway is a scenic limited access drive that stretches from Jamestown at the south end and crosses the penninsula past Williamsburg to Yorktown on the north. We parked near Merchant Square and walked to the Farmers' Market to buy a few things for our planned picnic on the James River. Then we unloaded the bikes and headed down the parkway. We made it almost as far as Jamestown (that's Jamestown Island across the water) before we turned around and headed back. We stopped for our picnic in a nice grassy area a few feet from the river then it was back to peddling until Lorri's front tire blew out. Fortunately we weren't too far from our starting point so we walked the bikes back even though we had several offers of assistance.
