May 28th, 2008, Williamsburg, VA: General Update Well, mostly we've been hanging out, wotking on the house, getting to know the neighbors and doing a little local exploring - no major excitement. Here are a few photos of some recent not majorly exciting events. May 14. Our dear friend Edith sent Lorri a huge box of assorted cheeses for her birthday. That's about half of them on the left. On the right is the big cheese, my brother Bob, with the birthday girl. May 15, Waller Mill Park. Not too far from our house there is a nice size reservior with several hiking trails as well as kayak, canoe and row boat rentals. We opted for the hiking trails. May 17, Colonial Williamsburg, Drummers Call. This was the yearly "Drummers Call" weekend in the Historic Area. The fife and drummers come from all over the country to take part in the festivities. Uncle Bob even stopped by on his way to work! He's a fife and drum aficionado. They are very colorful and very loud! Just a few more shots. In the third photo from the left, the fellow in the doorway of the house is none other than Thomas Jefferson! Actually he's the guy that interprets TJ for Colonial Williamsburg but he's wearing street clothes. No good fife and drum march is complete without firing a few cannon. The whole affair was web cast live and recorded for posterity. Click here if you have time to watch a corps in action! Sunday, May 18th. It was another nice day in the Tidelands so we decided to check out the bike trail that will eventually extend from Jamestown to Richmond along Route 5 and the James River, a distance of about fifty miles. So, we threw the fat-tired beach cruisers in the Van and took off. It's a nice flat easy ride, very suitable for our single speed bikes. Only about eight miles are complete, as far as I know. We got to the Chickahominy River Park where trail ended and stopped for lunch. It was a great ride and we made it back to the van just as the weather turned windy, dark and rainy. Wednesday, May 21, The Spotswood Course at Colonial Williamsburg. I figured as long as I was committed to playing two rounds of golf at the end of the month with my old fraternity brothers at Penn State, it couldn't hurt to get out and practice a little. My brother Bob was kind enough to prevail upon his contacts and got us on the course for free. I should have taken more photos but I was too busy looking for my errant shots. Tuesday, May 27, Beach Day. It was yet another beautiful warm late spring day in the Burg and we decided a trip to the beach was in order. In this case the "beach" was just off Colonial Parkway on the James River, not too far from Jamestown. It's a nice little beach complete with sand and sun bathers!
