The 4th fell on a Friday this year and most of San Diego County took had the day off and spent it at Moonlight Beach. I've never seen it so crowded!

July 12th: The World Beach Bocce Ball Championships at Dog Beach in Del Mar.

I'm not so sure "World" is quite appropriate. It was more like "North Coastal San Diego County" Beach Bocce Ball Championships. Then again, maybe this is the only place in the world where beach bocce ball is played which would make the winner the champion of the world! On closer inspection, it looked to me like most of the competitors and spectators were having fun and that probably the only thing world-class was the beer drinking. I suspect this tournament will get bigger every year - all the fun of an Over-the-Line tournament and no athleticism required! I might take up the sport.

An early evening shot of Vulcan Ave and the railroad tracks with a big BNSF train chugging by. In my mind I can hear the blast of the horn. Home sweet home.
