Green Dot on Iron Mountain - GC5D8E

Among the Clouds (Iron Mountain) - GC5969

June 13, 2002

Another nice day in San Diego, well Poway would be more accurate, and a good day for a hike up Iron Mountain. Two new caches were placed since my last visit, so the time was right.

The Green Dot

Starting with Green Dot which is pretty close to the "T" intersection where one trail goes up Iron Mountain and the other goes toward Ramona Overlook and Ellie Lane. The cache was relatively easy to find, mainly because the published coordinates were right on. My trusty Garmin GPS III virtually "zeroed out" over the cache.

I was a little concerned about leaving the trail because all the side trails that seemed to lead toward the Cache were blocked off with downed branches. I found a way around them but then hid when someone passed on the trail nearby. To hide, all you have to do is sit down and you can't be seen from the trail.

The Cache is actually buried in the ground with the top (The Green Dot) about an inch above the surface. Very clever hiding place.

Among the Clouds

I read on the Cache page that the last Cacher to search for this one noted that it appeared to be gone but he saw a lid in a nearby crack in the rock. Well I agree. I looked all over and could find no sign of the Cache or its contents but the lid turned out to be the lid to the cache as you can see from my photos.

There is the lid and me with the lid. I wrapped the lid, the Cache Page printouts that I had with me, as well as a pen and a pencil and the Knife I took from the Green Dot Cache in a plastic bag secured with rubber bands. I then re-hid the package in the spot shown in the spoiler photo on the Cache Page and shown again below.

This photo shows what the cache looked like before I hid it.

Big Green Dot on Iron Mountain

Somehow when I was up here last month, I missed the Big Breen Dot! I just overlooked it when I did my search on www.geocaching.com. Today I corrected my oversight and found it easily on a warm sultry July morning. The cache was in good shape although pretty visible from the ledges above it.

This is the successor cache to the original Iron Mountain Cache hidden by Gregg and Claudia. The only thing that remained from that cache was a dented old can of sardines, which I had found on a previous trip to Iron Mountain and left in some other worthy Cache. I was amused to find a spanking new can of sardines in this cache with a fork taped to it. As if anyone would open it up and just gobble it down right there on the top of Iron Mountain.
