On up the coast
Heading north on Highway 1, the winding road built in the early thirties to connect Hollywood to Pebble Beach, we stopped here and there for photos whenever the skies cleared enough to do so. It wasn't raining but the marine layer was pretty thick.
We stopped for lunch at a picnic area which was actually in Los Padres National Forrest. There was a walkway with landings and stairs that led to the beach far below. We amused ourselves by watching a guy teaching his girlfriend how to surf. It was her first time. The air temperature was about 55 and I'm guessing the water was about the same. I bet she really enjoyed it. You can see her in the photo in the right. She's that little frozen speck right in the middle.
These are views of a couple of the many bridges along the route. They were all designed by civil engineers from USC and constructed between 1931 and 1933 by Civilian Conservation Corps laborers who fortunately recognized and corrected all the design flaws which is why these marvels are still standing today. (At least that's the story I heard.)
