A couple days later we
decided to head up the Eastern Shore. To get there from here we went down
through Newport News, Norfolk, a little bit of Virginia Beach and on up the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel.

The Island in the background is actually the far end of a
tunnel. From there, the road is above the surface on pilings for a few miles
before dipping below into another tunnel.

Here is a map of one of the seven wonders of the
engineering world.

We arrived at Tom's Cove Campground on Chincoteague Island
on Wednesday afternoon. We found a good spot on the Cove and then headed to
37th annual Eastern Shore of Virginia Seafood Festival.

There were thousands of people there feasting on raw
oysters and clams, steamed clams, hush puppies, clam fritters, fried chicken
(?), fried clams, and all sorts of stuff like that.

For an extra $5 you got a plastic beer mug and five beers!

They even had entertainment, Billy Joe something-or-other
and the Saltwater Cowboys.

Check out those beer mugs!

More views from our spot.

The next morning we went out on Assateague Island National
Seashore. This is the lighthouse that had flashed us all night long the
previous night.

An old wreck we happened to see.
We headed north to Ocean City, MD, where we walked the
boardwalk for a while.

We attended the "Springfest" where we got more great
seafood.

Later we bought an order of Boardwalk Fries and actually
ate most of them even though we were already stuffed. They were that good.
Next stop, Bethany Beach, in Delaware, our third state of
the day.

Scenes from Bethany Beach.

Back in Ocean City, we stopped at "Seacrets" which bills
itself as Jamaica in the US. The floors were covered in sand and the
atmosphere was definitely tropical...

... and so were the drinks. We had a "Big Bamboo", sort of
a Mai Tai on steroids.

Ocean City...my kind of town...
We spent the night on Assateague State Beach, MD. We were
the only people in our section of the campground and the only people on the
beach.

You can see the van over the dunes.

The beach.

This deer was looking down on us at twilight. I was going
to fix the camera flash reflection in his eyes but decided not to. It looks
sort of eerie.
