On Monday, June 11, we left Williamsburg, finally, and
started our trip home with plans to stop in Cleveland and St. Louis, but
otherwise not wasting a lot of time on the journey.

We traversed the Blue Ridge stopping at
one point to photograph a small piece of the Shenandoah Valley.

Monday night we spent at Audra State Park
in the wilds of West Virginia, somewhere near Buckhannon. On Tuesday
afternoon we arrived at Chagrin Falls in the Cleveland area for a visit
with the McHugh clan. I've made a separate page with photos from those
couple days. Click here or on "Visiting
McHughs" to the left to go to that page.

Back on the road Thursday afternoon, we
made it as far as Alum Creek State Park, just north of Columbus, OH.

The next night was spent at Lieber State Recreation
Area, somewhere west of Indianapolis, IN. We spent some time off I-70 on
old US Route 40, "The National Highway", because the weekend of
June 16 & 17 was "National Highway Festival Weekend". It wasn't very
exciting but we did stumble upon a winery which we had visited a couple
years ago on our "Wine in Every State" tour. Cameo Vineyards makes some
fairly decent wines, mostly in the sweeter style of the mid-west using
locally grown grapes.

In St. Louis, we celebrated Fathers Day
with Jack Vierling, Lorri's dad, and me, hence the pair of Jacks. Lorri
said we should have used jokers and I was shocked at such disrespect on
Fathers' Day. We swung by the retirement community to which the
Vierlings are planning on moving as soon as it is complete next year.

On Monday, June 18th, we left St. Louis
and barreled west. After about 500 miles we stopped at Wilson Lake State
Park, somewhere near Salina, Kansas. We were about the only campers in
our section. The weather was quite nice (after blasting through t-storms
for a good part of the day) so we made a nice dinner and took a few
photos.

500 or so more miles brought us across
Kansas and Colorado most of the way through the Rockies. We stopped at a
BLM campground tucked along Eagle Creek and sandwiched between I-70, US
6 and some railroad tracks. That's me at the top of a 10,000 foot peek
which I free-climbed just for kicks. Just kidding, that's somebody else
and he's only about 15 feet off the ground.
We spent the next two nights at motels.
One in Cedar City, Utah, and the other in Primm, Nevada. It was about
170 degrees in the southwest, so we thought air-conditioned motel rooms
would be a good idea. We arrived home in Encinitas on Friday (sadly
missing Martini Night by a day) in time to enjoy a walk on the beach and
a sunset from our balcony. It was a great trip and it's great to be
home. |
