What Happened?
In a moment of weakness, perhaps insanity, I've signed up to run in the Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon on June 1st in San Diego. Not only that, I've agreed to pester my friends, relatives, neighbors, business associates (do I have business associates?) and people I barely know to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. What's come over me?
How it Happened:
While innocently jogging at my usually peaceful pace around Lake Miramar a while ago, I found myself surrounded by hoards (well maybe 60 or 80) runner, walker, jogger type people who seemed overly happy to be out hurting themselves early on a Saturday morning. As fate would have it, I found myself running at about the same pace as a nice young lady and asked her what the heck was going on.
She told me about Team in Training, a group of volunteers that raise money for the Leukemia Society while torturing, er, I mean training to run in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. The team provides expert coaching and training advice and the team members (us volunteers) raise money for the cause, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Each runner is also paired with an "Honored Teammate", an individual who has been affected by a blood-related disorder. My Honored teammate is Lora Simone, a young lady who was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in March of 2000. Click here to see photos of Lora and read what she says about her illness.
Why it Happened:
Well, I've always wanted to run a marathon. That's not true but I've often wondered if I COULD run a marathon. I never actually thought I'd TRY to until I heard about this group and their cause, which is raising money to fight cancer. Last year my sister, Jeannie McHugh, and my good friend, Dana Seguin, both died from cancer, not leukemia, but what the heck, one cancer is as nasty as another. This seemed like a good way to honor them both and to help others at the same time. And, believe it or not, I thought it might be fun!

Jeannie & Dana, this one's for you!
