Week of Feb. 23

Training Schedule

Actual Training

Sunday: 3 or 4 mile easy run or cross train. Six miles at the lake, first three in 27:20, stop, drink water, second three in 23:00, which is about a 90% effort for me.
Monday: 6 miles of hills. Up and down, up and down

6.2 miles: Mira Lago to Scripps Lake to Mesa Madera to Red Cedar to Aviary to Scripps Ranch Blvd to Spring Canyon to Sunset Ridge. Lots o' hills. 63 minutes. I was chuggin'.

Tuesday: Off or easy x-train. I think I'll take a hike.

I think I took the day off. Too wet!

Wednesday: Five easy miles

Did five easy miles at scenic Lake Miramar.

Thursday: 6 mile Fartlek day. Don't know what Faretlekking is? Click the link.

Ran in Pacific Beach from Crystal Pier down the beach walk to the jetty then across to the Bay side and back up along the Bay, almost to the Catamaran then back across to the beach to the pier. Got soaked by rain and sweat. 48 minutes, no fartlekking.

Friday: OFF! OFF! OFF! Cocktails in the spa? Order out for pizza?

Saturday: Team Session No. 4, Solana Beach, 7 Miles (BACK DOWN!) Injury Clinic Before Run. I already know how to get injured. I'm hoping I learn how not to.

Oh! It was an Injury PREVENTION Clinic which was pretty informative. The run was from Solana Beach down the Coast through Del Mar and back, about 7 miles. I didn't get injured.

Week of Feb. 15

Proposed

Actual

Sunday: 3 or 4 mile easy run or cross train. I need to hit some golf balls. Is that cross training? Walked around the neighborhood. Thought about hitting golf balls.
Monday: 6 miles of hills. I've laid out a course around bucolic Scripps Ranch. I drove it. I think it will be harder to run it than drive it.

Ran around Scripps. Down to the lake, up Scripps Lake, Red Cedar to Mesa Madeira to Magnifica, to Semillon, to Spring Canyon, up and down, up and down, up and down. 6 miles.

Tuesday: Off or easy x-train

Hit a bucket of golf balls in the morning  (upper body x-training), rode bicycle 50 minutes in the afternoon (lower body x-training).

Wednesday: Five easy miles

Ran five easy miles at Mission Bay then went to Road Runner Sports and bought new running shoes! Tomorrow I'm going to fartlek on them, in them, whatever.

Thursday: 6 mile Fartlek day. Don't know what Faretlekking is? Click the link.

One mile warm-up, five half-miles at between 3:30 and 3:40 with SLOW 1/4 mile jog in between, then one mile cool-down and mile walk.

Friday: OFF! OFF! OFF!

Not OFF! Made today my "long run" due to golf tomorrow. Ran around Mission Bay East side from South Shores up Ingrahm to Grand and on around. It took 80 minutes at a leisurely pace (9 min. +)

Saturday: I'm supposed to run 11 miles at the Bonita Golf Course but instead, I'm actually PLAYING golf at Pala Mesa Golf Course. Maybe I'll run alongside the golf cart. The way I play golf, I'd probably get my 11 miles in.

Played poorly, drank beer (carbo-loading?), had fun

Week of Feb. 9

Sunday: 3 - 4 miles easy run or cross-train. No problem.

Monday: 6 miles hills. Hmm. I wonder if I can find a downhill six miles long. Would that work? I actually ran all the hills around the lake. I don't think it was quite six miles though.

Tuesday: off or easy cross train. Rain today. Weight machine time.

Wednesday: 5 miles easy. Went from the 1 mile marker to the 3-1/2 mile marker and back in 45 minutes including two water stops and one short chat with one of the lake "regulars".

Thursday: Fartlek Day! Need I say more? I got fartlekked this morning at the lake. I ran slightly over six miles total, with a one mile warm up (9 minutes), four fartleks (3 and 2), stop for water, three more fartleks, and then I was fartlekked out so I did a slow jog (10 minute miles) back to the car. I didn't rain!

Friday: OFF! Woo Hoo!

Saturday: Another beautiful morning in San Diego! The ten-mile run started at Spanish Landing, down Harbor Drive, loop around Harbor Island, continue to Seaport Village and back, skipping the Harbor Island loop. I started slow, finished strong and felt great! Maybe I can do this.

Week of Feb. 2

Sunday: Happy Ground Hogs Day! 68 degrees and sunny here in San Diego. Who cares if the Punxatawny Phil saw his shadow or not! I jogged a slow (9 minute miles) four miles at scenic Lake Miramar, stopping for water at Natalie Park

Monday: five miles trails (hills) at scenic Lake Miramar. I ran up & down the trails from about the 1 mile marker to the 2-3/4 marker, then to the parking lot on the road, then up Scripps Lake Drive to Sunset Ridge, then left on Sunset Ridge to home (six+ miles?). Whew!

Tuesday: The training schedule calls for easy cross-training or "off" today. Does bar-hopping count as easy cross-training? I chose the "off" option.

Wednesday: ran five medium (2 8-1/2 and 3 eights) miles at scenic Lake Miramar

Thursday: The training schedule calls for 6 miles "Fartlek". Honest! I don't know what a Fartlek is but I think it has something to do with running "intervals". I'll have to ask my mentor how to Fartlek. I'll do my six mile Fartlek at scenic Lake Miramar. Feb 6: Well Fartlek or not, I ran six 1/2 mile intervals at 3:10 to 3:20 (except my last which was 3:30) and walked 1/4 mile between each with a 1/2 mile jog warm-up and cool-down.

Friday: Training schedule calls for "Off"! I'll be available for a long lunch or happy hour. Hey, how about a happy hour fund-raiser? I'll fire up the spa and serve martinis, $10 a pop, proceeds to The L&L Society. Hmmm... No lunch offers, and no one showed up for happy hour so I had to drink all the martinis myself. At $10 a pop that's, let's see, um, I can't remember...

Saturday: Ran at South Shores, Mission Bay, all the way up to Grand Avenue and back along the east side of the Bay. I think it was about 8 to 8 1/2 miles round trip because, according to my highly accurate internal pacing mechanism, I figure we were running at about a 9 minute mile pace and it took me 77 minutes. You do the math. I'm too tired. Met more nice TNT people, including my mentor, Heather, whose words of encouragement regarding my martinis-in-the-spa fund-raising idea, were very inspiring.

My First TNT Run:

Saturday, Feb. 1: ran seven miles, medium pace, without hurting myself. Got a free hat at the Road Runner Sports shoe clinic. Free shoes would have been better. Met more nice TNT people.
