A Week at the Beach Our house in Corolla Light was BIG and nice. Corolla is at the northerly terminus of the paved highway that traverses to Outer Banks. Here's another chance to check the MAP . Beyond that, you need 4WD to drive on the sand if you want to go farther north. Here is what the house looked like: That's Deb & Mike on the stairs. The house had three master BR suites, two "bunk" rooms for kids with a bathroom in between, a large kitchen with all the modern conveniences, a family room with ocean views and a media room complete with DVD player. The dining room table could double as a shuffleboard. Decks all around and a four or five person spa inside one of the screen porches. It was a couple hundred yards from the beach. We rented ocean kayaks for the week as well a beach barrows to haul our coolers full of beer back and forth. In this first group of beach photos, we have Malarie and Jacob posing in one of the kayaks. We took them out on the water a couple times when the waves were calm. In the background you can see the dunes and the houses beyond. Next is yours truly and Mal getting a start on the sand castle. For you geography buffs, that's the ATLANTIC ocean in the background. Aren't those "waves" wimpy? Amazingly, people still try to surf them. On the right is the finished castle which my daughter Deborah unashamedly tried to take credit for building. She was out shopping or something while her husband Mike and I (with help and advice from Mal & Jake) sweated and slaved for hours shaping this masterpiece. Later, when Mike and I were enjoying a well-earned martini back at the house, Debbie told all the admiring passers-by that she built it! Hmmm...that's my daughter. A few more beach shots: Lorri and Jake playing beach bocce ball, Lorri, Deb, Nicki and Matt with little Madeline relaxing, and Jacob displaying his skim board prowess. Last but not least is Mal, Jake and me on the evening of my best Blackbeard impression. You history buffs probably know that Blackbeard, AKA Edward Teach, the scourge of the high seas, was finally captured and killed at Ocracoke. Well, mateys, now starts the trip back to California.
