Crossing over the Pont des Arts on our way to the Louvre we noticed these serious-looking handcuffs amongst the more routine lovers' locks. I'm just wondering a little about what that couple was thinking.

DSCN1925.jpg (251786 bytes)

Anyway, we zipped into the Louvre and, what else? We went straight to the Mona Lisa.

DSCN1926.jpg (208036 bytes)  DSCN1929.jpg (156600 bytes)

You can't get too close to the lady nor can you get a good photo of her, but at least we can say we saw the most famous painting in the world.

DSCN1931.jpg (217727 bytes)

There were many, many monumental works such as this one. Where did they gat all that paint?

 DSCN1934.jpg (129959 bytes)  DSCN1936.jpg (125110 bytes)

Winged Victory was a pretty popular spot but it was up on a pedestal so at least you could see it and appreciate it.

DSCN1942.jpg (141153 bytes)

This lady artist was getting a lot of attention for her pretty fair copy of , um, a famous work of art.

DSCN1944.jpg (135141 bytes)  DSCN1947.jpg (177591 bytes)  DSCN1954.jpg (195009 bytes)  DSCN1952.jpg (175957 bytes)

We got close up and personal with Rembrandt, Albrecht Durer, the Venus de Milo and the Three Graces as well as dozens of others. Overwhelming.

DSCN1951.jpg (244998 bytes)  DSCN1956.jpg (406081 bytes)

The Louvre Pyramid.

DSCN1957.jpg (242320 bytes)  DSCN1958.jpg (239506 bytes)  DSCN1961.jpg (334688 bytes)

Another excellent picnic lunch, this time along the banks of the Seine near Pont des Arts. The girl in red.

DSCN1964.jpg (189635 bytes)  DSCN1971.jpg (154281 bytes)  DSCN1966.jpg (161733 bytes)  DSCN1970.jpg (242109 bytes)

After lunch we made our way toward Notre Dame, first stopping at the Conciergerie and then St Chapelle. The Parts of the Conciergerie dates to medieval times and has been a royal residence, seat of government and last but not least a prison. It was here that Marie Antoinette was held before, well, you know how that ended. That is a replica of the Lady on the right.

DSCN1973.jpg (140058 bytes)  DSCN1972.jpg (157916 bytes)  DSCN1974.jpg (341747 bytes)  DSCN1978.jpg (377527 bytes)

St Chapelle is famous for its amazing stained glass windows.

DSCN1980.jpg (346172 bytes)  DSCN1981.jpg (392829 bytes)  DSCN1984.jpg (379281 bytes)  DSCN1985.jpg (487918 bytes)

I wish my lame photography could do them justice.

DSCN1986.jpg (304821 bytes)  DSCN1987.jpg (195302 bytes)  DSCN1988.jpg (229107 bytes)

Sainte Chapelle

DSCN1991.jpg (230626 bytes)  DSCN1993.jpg (204357 bytes)  DSCN1995.jpg (144633 bytes)  DSCN1997.jpg (234881 bytes)

We then waited in line to get a glimpse of the interior of Notre Dame. While waiting I took photos of saints and gargoyles. The gargoyles look like they're having more fun.

DSCN1999.jpg (156185 bytes)  DSCN2001.jpg (256220 bytes)

Notre Dame was big and impressive...and crowded and some guy on a p.a. system kept saying "SSHHHHHHH be quiet, this is a place of worship" in four of five different languages.

DSCN2004.jpg (244215 bytes)  DSCN2006.jpg (254894 bytes)  DSCN2012.jpg (229748 bytes)

So naturally, we headed out for a Guinness then home for some re-grouping.

A couple vender stalls in Rue de Seine

Saturday dinner at Fish la Boissonnerie

DSCN2016.jpg (164392 bytes)  DSCN2017.jpg (229726 bytes)  DSCN2019.jpg (214368 bytes)

20h, 2P, Jack, T5. That must be us, reserved table number 5 for two at 8PM under the name of "Jack". We had an excellent dinner, the server spoke English as did the owner/bar tender.

DSCN2020.jpg (194418 bytes)  DSCN2021.jpg (202480 bytes)

It was a nice, friendly place and a great way to end our Saturday in Paris.

Sunday, April24, Easter in Paris

DSCN2023.jpg (276726 bytes)  DSCN2025.jpg (250150 bytes)    DSCN2028.jpg (274845 bytes)

We scheduled another day of walking and exploring. We headed upstream past St Michel and Notre Dame.

DSCN2027.jpg (251735 bytes)  DSCN2030.jpg (169935 bytes)  DSCN2034.jpg (155455 bytes)

It was yet another beautiful day.

DSCN2035.jpg (312001 bytes)

At the Jardin des Plantes we left the river and headed southwest through the gardens  and side streets.

DSCN2037.jpg (321316 bytes)  DSCN2039.jpg (204827 bytes)  DSCN2042.jpg (242153 bytes)

We stopped at the Arenes de Lutece, the ruins of a Roman amphitheater from the 1st century. It was pretty cool - there were a couple guys playing some decent music with a guitar and violin.

DSCN2045.jpg (314604 bytes)  DSCN2046.jpg (238986 bytes)  DSCN2048.jpg (222549 bytes)  DSCN2051.jpg (295032 bytes)

We made our way to Rue Mouffetard, a street that has been in service as a market street for centuries. At one corner there was a small band with an accordion player, guitar and so on, people dancing, speaking French...reminded me of New Orleans.

DSCN2053.jpg (171601 bytes)  DSCN2054.jpg (277334 bytes)  DSCN2057.jpg (287565 bytes)

It was full of shops, cafe's, farm stands and colorful people. We needed wine.

DSCN2059.jpg (278478 bytes)

This guy was in another square pounding away on a piano-on-a-wagon. He was good!

DSCN2062.jpg (198676 bytes)  DSCN2066.jpg (137131 bytes)  DSCN2069.jpg (309753 bytes)

The Pantheon, St Etienne-du-Mont, The Hotel California (you can never leave).

DSCN2070.jpg (195280 bytes)  DSCN2071.jpg (159579 bytes)

The University of Paris

DSCN2072.jpg (226451 bytes)  DSCN2073.jpg (194139 bytes)  DSCN2076.jpg (326886 bytes)

Meanwhile back along the quay, we were surprised to see about 500 roller-bladers whiz by for no particular reason. Maybe they do this every Easter. We lacked the French speaking skills to find out.

DSCN2079.jpg (222771 bytes)  DSCN2081.jpg (177791 bytes)  DSCN2082.jpg (245301 bytes)  DSCN2083.jpg (252721 bytes)

Guess what happened then? That's right, time for a Guinness!

  DSCN2084.jpg (230639 bytes)  DSCN2086.jpg (290915 bytes)  DSCN2087.jpg (177876 bytes)

Heading back to our apartment.

DSCN2088.jpg (276500 bytes)  DSCN2089.jpg (211389 bytes)  DSCN2090.jpg (246941 bytes)

These guys were killing it at the corner of Rue de Seine and Rue de Buci. There was a nice crowd enjoying the show.

DSCN2091.jpg (209689 bytes)  DSCN2093.jpg (243720 bytes)

Our favorite sweets store on Blvd St Germain. We had dinner in on Easter with slices of roasted pork from a street vendor and other goodies we had collected for the occasion, including some fine French wine.
