Our big event of the Summer (so far) was spending 2-1/2 weeks back east in Baltimore, then Williamsburg, VA, then Smith Mountain Lake (SML) in south-western Virginia.

June 10

We found out on our way to the airport that our flight to BWI was delayed and immediately had visions of further delays, cancellations, or worse, but it turned out fine.

The delay gave us a little extra time to start the trip off with a refreshing beverage that looked like this!

Our ride to BWI getting prepped.

Thursday, June 11

Mike and Debbie had the day off so we celebrated with an excellent lunch at Rocco's

Fish for Friday ready for the oven!

Saturday, June 13

It was off to Marshy Point for a gathering with the Skittle (easier to spell and type than their actual name) family

Video of Liv Playing Golf

Jake and Andee now live at Marshy and this is their abode - it's twice as big as it looks from the outside!

The front door.

Out the back door, this is their view. Poor kids have it rough...

Here is Lily Skittle with the great grandkids, Sloane and Olivia

Sunday, June 14

We visited Debbie's Salon for Lorri's makeup session

We had the whole place to ourselves because it was a Sunday!

Later we played a few serious games of Mexican Train.

Monday, June 15

We went for a walk on the TCB Rail Trail which stretches from here to Pennsylvania.

We didn't walk that far though, just a couple miles up the old railroad bed.

It's a nice, shady hike with periodic views of the creek which it parallels.

Tuesday, June 16

On Tuesday we made the always tedious drive from Towson, MD, to Williamsburg, VA. This time we stopped in historic downtown Fredericksburg, VA for a lunch break. This is where George Washington grew up. Rumor has it that, as a youngster, he threw a coin across the Rappahannock here, which is possible to do. It's not very wide. Rumors about throwing across the mile-wide Potomac are a little harder to believe.

Anyway, we had a nice lunch at Sammy T's

Wednesday, June 17

First order of business is to tour Colonial Williamsburg. Just kidding. First order of business is to stop by Williamsburg winery and enjoy a glass of Virginia's finest on the breezy "Pavilion" overlooking the vines.

We selected a nice bottle of chilled Albarino...

...and proceeded to the upper deck

The vines look a little sparse, probably because of the spring cold snap.

Here Lorri is pointing out to Bob that the bottle is empty and perhaps we should purchase another.

Thursday, June 18

Speaking of wine, we celebrated our traditional Thursday happy hour at The Cheese Shop/Fat Canary on Merchant Square.

It's fun to sit on the front patio and watch people walk by and try to guess what state or country they are from.

Cheers!

Happy Hour Cheers to all our friends and family!

Friday, June 19

No visit to the Burg is complete without a Philly cheesesteak from Rick's - the best cheesesteaks in Virginia!

Saturday, June 20

Smith Mountain Lake!

We rented a chateau on the water for the week - seven bedrooms, 5-1/2 bathrooms, and plenty of other space for gathering, games, dining, and just relaxing.

Here are some photos I took when we first arrived.

A photo from the back of the Bridgewater Shops. Looked like fun mini-golf but we never got around to playing.

Mexican train. I took this photo because I was out of tiles, which means I won! Poor Debbie was so distraught.

Another great sunset

Sloan on the rope swing, her favorite thing.

Debbie may be laughing at Colin's attempt on the rope swing.

Tuesday, June 23

"Dottie", the fawn named by Olivia, spent a lot of time all week long hanging out by the side of the house.

A rare moment of R&R for the kids

Wednesday, June 24

The kids on paddleboards and kayaks out in the middle of the lake. The lake is huge! Our little inlet is just a small fraction of it.

The golf challenge combined chipping a whiffle golf ball and putting a real one.

Here I am admiring one of my many perfect shots. Well, maybe my only perfect shot. And maybe it was just a sort of OK shot.

The "skins" ended up making a remarkable comeback to beat the "shirts" by one hole.

Mal Mal and her girls

Sloaney

Olivia for sure is NOT an airhead, only her float is.

Have I mentioned the nice sunsets?

Time for s'mores around the fire pit!

It was getting dark but the photo makes it look brighter than it was.

Looks like a tasty s'more!

Don't remember what was so funny but I love Mal's happy laugh. Looks like Sloane does too!

Uncle Hobble and his sparkler! Big kids can have fun too!

Just like the little kids!

Thursday, June 25

This winery was recommended by the guy at the Visitor Center

It was a great setting out in the countryside

But it was a little too warm to sit outside

So we sat here and enjoyed the AC and the view

 Photo Session!

We set aside some time on Thursday evening for some family photos

Mal selfie with Jake and Mike

Drifters is a restaurant in a marina which is about 3/4 mile by boat from our house and about 5 miles by car.

They tried to stick us back in the corner, but.

Due to lack of  boat, we drove there.

We split into two tables and had a nice lunch overlooking to marina and the lake

It was fitting end to a great week!

Another selfie with Deb and Lorri

The "adult" table

Jake ate a one-pound burger!

Saturday, June 27

We checked in, went out to lunch, returned our rental car and...

Video of our lunch location

Made "room for a little fun" in our spacious and luxurious suite at the Airport Courtyard by Marriott!

Sunday, June 28

We had a direct flight from Charlotte, NC, to SD. The plane took off on time and arrived early - an almost miracle! This is us in our extra legroom seats.

And thus ended a great couple weeks! How lucky we are to have such a great family!
