Road Trip 10 - The Pacific Northwest

Portland

By this time it was Friday afternoon and we were looking for a place to spend Labor Day weekend. Portland seemed to fit the bill but there was no room at many inns.

We finally found a room at the downtown Hilton for Friday, Saturday and Sunday with parking for our "oversized vehicle" a convenient six blocks away.

Our parking spot

How to see the City?

The Pink Bus of course!

These photos are from the Pink Bus Tour

Ahh, Sacagawea...

A Shot of Lorri riding in the Pink Bus mirror

View from up the hill near the zoo

Going over the bridge. I wasn't sure the bus would fit.

Real Mummies! Too scary for me.

Gathering clouds and the "Jet Boat Tour"

After the bus tour we went walkin'

Portland "The Rose City"

The is a "Benson Bubbler" water fountain, many of which can be found around town.

Could it be time for a Guinness?

Friday night we went bar/appetizer hopping starting at:

Lorri ordering

Lorri tasting

The flights. (We had both!)

Next stop - Portland City Grill a great place on the 30th floor

Going up?

The view

Another view

The food and drink before we ate and drank it all.

Next stop:

Next stop "Departure" a restaurant on the 15th floor

The view from Departure overlooking Pioneer Square

The view as it got dark

We shared a table with a very nice local couple and they took this photo of us.

My Halloween costume

View from our hotel room

Saturday

There was and art show in "The Pearl" a section of downtown Portland.

Lots of trees

Powell's, supposedly the world's largest book store under one roof.

We missed James Dean... Carpe Librum

All those books made me thirsty

We tried some local brews here at Deschute's

Pretty good stuff

Continuing to explore the Pearl District...

This street until recently had train tracks running down the middle. You can see former loading docks on both sides which now form walkways and patios for the new shops and restaurants.

What do you know?

More Portland beer!

St. Patrick of Kells

They had private booths!

Heading on up to 23rd Street

We had lunch here

Selfie, sort of...

OK, enough beer tasting. Let's get serious! We sampled bourbon, gin and vodka and I bought a bottle of Portland gin!

The horse we rode in on

Pioneer Square. Portland, like most major cities has a diverse and colorful population.

Sunday

Strolling along the river

Saturday Market goes on Sundays too!

Since 1974!

The little girl and her mom (I guess) were very good!

Voodoo Doughnuts! The most famous place in Portland!

The line was too long.

And we weren't hungry.

Lots of bicyclists in Portland; some of them even stop for red lights and stop signs!

This must be Chinatown. The inscription translates to: "Not much beyond this point"

Needless to say, we did not try the Chop Suey here.

More Chinatown

Walking on down the river..

We had lunch at this floating restaurant

Then walked up the hill to the other PSU

Portland State University

It's connected to the downtown area by this green belt

I think Benson of Benson Bubbler fame used to live here

Or maybe it was here

Teddy Roosevelt had something to do with Portland.

Time for a rest at Jake's

This was a great wine shop. They even had a selection from the Jura area of France!

Monday checking out
