Segovia

Like Pamplona, we spent one night, a Saturday night in Segovia.

And, also like Pamplona, the hotel was great, the town was a pleasant surprise and we had a great time!

This is our room in the Infanta Isabel Hotel

The hotel is on the main plaza and our room faced the plaza. This was our view looking left.

Looking across the plaza from our room

and looking to the right

After we checked in we went strolling and looking for a place to sample "crispy roast suckling pig" for which the city is famous

We found the Alcázar, a fairy tale-like castle at one end of town.

We decided to come back in the morning, pay the admission price, and do a tour.

This afternoon we were on a food mission.

The castle would have to wait.

The Santa Maria Monastery

Here's where we had lunch. Actually it was around 4:30 when we sat down, so it was a late lunch.

This was a small family-owned place with six or seven tables. We ordered the cuarto de cochinillo asado special for 2-3 persons. What the heck!

We had an excellent Rioja wine for an additional six Euros!

The photo does not do justice to the poor little piggy. It was tender, juicy, with some crispiness and the fries were a bonus.

We ate everything except the bones and a hoof!

We had a shot of this as a digestif. It is similar to grappa and just as bad, maybe worse. But I drank it!

Thank you Don Jímeno, whoever you are!

Segovia, ole!

After "lunch" we walked to the other end of town to see the first century Roman Aqueduct

I am in awe of structures like this that have been standing for 2000 years.

The Romans knew what they were doing. It was functional and beautiful and durable.

Sort of like Lorri

Are you kidding me? No mortar?

Nope, don't see any mortar.

Amazing! I know the word is over-used.

Amazing!

Here we are at Canavan's. After all the sight-seeing and piggy-eating, we were in need of a Guinness for our strength!

Also, Canavan happens to be the last name of Ryan from Ireland, who is married to Katie, the daughter of Tom and Patty, Patty being Lorri's sister's husband's sister, and good friends of ours. Got that? Sláinte!

Dessert!

I think we were in the Spanish Duero River wine producing area

Sunday morning we went back to the Alcázar to see what it was all about

I think the scariest part of this getup is the shoes

All hail the queen and the bishop!

Selfie shadow on Lorri's face. Sorry.

Strolling back through the Jewish Quarter

I don't know what the title of this sculpture is but I call it "Jet Lag"

These spires must be pre-Gaudí. I wonder if he ever saw them. I wonder what his inspirations were...

This was taken from the car on our way out of town. Yes, the salida ciudad, the exit, is down that alley and that's where we went!
Segovia was an unexpected pleasure to visit. Like Pamplona, we would have enjoyed another day there.
Alas, all adventures come to and end. Sunday night we stayed at the Airport Hilton and Monday, October 10, 2016, we were back in our little house in Encinitas, CA, USA!
